Welcome To Sanctuary
Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers in the beautiful Northern Rivers Hinterland town of Tyalgum, NSW. The shelter was conceived more than 15 years ago as a small-scale project to support the local home-school circle students in learning animal husbandry by taking on the care of old retired horses.
From a humble beginning of housing aged horses, the project continued to grow thanks to the support of the local community in Tyalgum who donated their resources, time and funds to assist the volunteers in building a more solid sanctuary infrastructure. This involved building secure self-contained pens and proper fences.
Over the years, more animals were gifted as people all over the region came to know of the sanctuary as a place of refuge and care for retired, unwell or unwanted animals. Eventually, people all over Australia started to give their animals to us.
As of today, we care for and house more than 100 rescued animals consisting of Horses – full size and miniature; a family of Alpacas from Nimbin with a passport from Afghanistan; wild Goats from the desert of Western Australia; Sheep; Emus from Victoria; Italian Sheep dogs; rescue Cats; a 400kg Pig with tusks (called Pumba); Doves; Chickens; Ducks and Guinea Pigs. Annually, we have visits from the Northern Territory Whistling Ducks and a six-foot Jabiru who make Noah’s Ark home for a moment during its migration. We have even seen an infant Albatross find its way to us on the way from Midway Island to Tasmania.
What’s Happening This Week?
We have seen more than 100mm of rainfall in the last hours. That’s enough water to send the goats and sheep into their pen and stay there for the whole day!
Angelica, finds shelter inside her dog pen, only after pushing Mumma the goat out. Angelo has somehow jumped the fence into the next paddock and self isolated from the insistent play of Harriet (our 6 month old maremma puppy). The ducks are expanding their territory and loving the rain.
Stay tuned for more news next week! and don’t forget to support the sanctuary by donating below!
